Visual Active –  State of the Image Festival, Arnhem 2007.

“Het grensgebied tussen performance, muziek en beeld is vervaagd. Hierdoor onstaat een versmelting tussen bestaande disciplines. Dankzij nieuwe technische mogelijkheden bevindt de hedendaagse (digitale) kunst zich in een stroomversnelling.”

Visual_Active wil nieuwe ervaringen oproepen op gebied van nieuwe media en live performance. Het programma biedt een gevarieerd aanbod waarin onderzoek en experiment een belangrijk uitgangspunt is. Tijdens Visual Active worden performances getoont waarin beeld en geluid live of realtime wordt gemixt, gerenderd of getekend. Zowel techniek en experiment bepaalt de zoektocht naar een unieke artistieke expressie.  Naast het hoofdprogramma met live acts zijn er workshops en presentaties op gebied van realtime software en mediakunst.

Workshops:
Tijdens het State of the Image Festival presenteert Visual_Active een intensieve 3-daagse VJ Workshop door Mia Makela (aka. Solu). Het programma waarmee gewerkt wordt is Isadora, een realtime video applicatie. Tijdens deze workshop leer je de ins- en outs van dit programma en hoe je interactie op verschillende manieren kunt toepassen. Door te werken met ‘patches’ en ‘actors’ leer je hoe je je eigen ‘tool’ kunt ontwerpen en creatieve ideeen toepast binnen live performance.

Isadora
Isadora is een grafische programmeer omgeving, waarin interactie kan plaatsvinden met media en in het bijzonder met real-time video-manipulatie. De software bestaat uit zogenaamde ‘bouwblokken’ die aanelkaar gelinkt kunnen worden. Het pakket biedt een bijna ongelimiteerd aantal mogelijkheden, waardoor je je eigen artistieke impuls kunt volgen. Solu:
Mia Makela (Solu) is een finse media kunstenares, activiste, initiator en VJ. Naast haar live performances geeft zij lezingen over verschillende thema’s, zoals robots, audiovisuele cultuur, tactical sound, en haar artistieke werk. In 2004 lanceerde zij dorkbot.org in Barcelona. Een wereldwijd event georganiseerd voor en door mensen die  zich bezighouden met ‘strange things with electricity’. http://www.solu.org/index.html

Modul8 workshop: Ilan Katin (Mapping Festival, Geneva)
Modul8 is a user interface designed in every detail for real time, combined with a flexibility of use that will satisfy novices discovering the software as well as advanced users. Paul Mumford and Lara Houston have been organizing Narrative Lab, a program of lectures, screenings, performances and projects as a major strand since of AVITUK since 2003. The group has been seeking to encourage debate, spark new work arising from theory and facilitate collaboration examining the territories of narrative. Over the last two years the narrative Lab has hosted lectures on hypertextuality, meta narratives, psychogeography, screen aesthetics, structuralism,_process methodologies and various production techniques.
